DoorDash introduced a new reward program called platinum award. Program or something like that. Now, originally, at least the time of the video above, it was supposed to increase the wages for dashers who – all the time like myself. I have a 90 plus acceptance rating. And a very high customer rating.
So at the time of the video above, it looked like they were trying to union bust by giving us more money.
Well, I’m writing this blog post about two to three months later, and this reward program is kind of a sham.
We’re definitely not getting the money. We’re supposed to be getting it used to be where I can make a $100 well within 5 hours. Now, it takes almost eight hours. If I work ten hours, I might make a $130 maybe.
Now, there’s a few problems that are going on:
1. There are less deliveries. People are not spending as much on doordash because of the rising cost of things which leads me to number two
2. Restaurants have increased their fees in California or at least Los Angeles. The Minimum wage for fast food workers is $20 an hour. So restaurants felt they need to increase the price of everything just to “accommodate” for the money they lost. This increase was passed on to the customers.
3. The restaurants fired a bunch of delivery workers and employees they just didnt like from there restaurants, just to compensate for the $20 increase.
So this put more drivers into gig working apps like doordash and grubhub. So the market is heavily saturated.
4. There are tons of platinum level drivers, so even if it’s true that I beat out it’s about with a gold status, I’m still competing with several platinum drivers, so it doesn’t really seem to make much difference either way.
So what do you do? I mean, you could try to put job applications in. Of course, but the job market’s incredibly crazy competitive, especially with restaurants, letting jobs go and that competition is trickling to other industries. It’s competitive just to get a grocery store job.
Now that’s not to say, I’m not going to look for a job because I’m looking for one now.
But between this new program and the $20 a hour wage minimum wage, the job market in LA, at least for gig work is concerned, has gotten really bad.
Which makes it very complicated for people with disabilities who do Doordash, because it’s the best source of income for our situation.
