I Screwed Up–Story 4

Thank God the police showed up.  Two officers stepped out the car, a black man and a white man, wearing pressed dark uniforms and clean cut.  I hoped that all I had to do was tell them the truth, which was hard to believe, and I’d be going home!  Well, maybe stop by a hospital first. My ribs started to get worst.

Both officers approached me as the black officer said, “Do you need a doctor?”

“Hell yeah!” I screamed.

“Excuse me!” Redhead said, “I’m his wife.  I need to remind you that we’re Christian Scientists.  We don’t believe in your hospitals.  God will heal us.”

I grabbed the white officer’s uniform.  “Get me a fucking doctor.  Damn that bitch.  My wife is in Sacramento.”

Redhead walked to the black officer. “Now what a minute! How did you get here all of a sudden?”

The black officer said, “Look ma’am, never mind how we got here. It’s not important.  This man needs a doctor and we’re going to call him one.”

As she stared at a square and compass ring on the Black officer’s finger, Redhead said to the Black officer, “What is that?” She then gave him a weird handshake.

The black officer looked surprised, then he whispered something in her ear.  After she whispered back, he nodded his head and signaled his partner to wait a moment.  Redhead and the officer then walked away a few feet.

“What the hell’s going on?” I asked.

“Wait.” the white officer said.

The two did some weird handshakes and mumbling.  Seconds later, they gave each other hugs and referred to each as brother and sister.  The black officer waved the other officer over, who shook Redhead’s hand.  Then the three started talking and laughing for like thirty minutes.

But during their conversation, I screamed, “What the hell is going on?” and chronically complained about needing a doctor.  Redhead told them I was insane and probably talking crazy because I got hit so hard.  The police never questioned how I got my injuries and seemed to had forgotten about the blonde and Jimmy’s deaths.

Also during the conversation, Redhead asked, “So how did you find us?” The white officer said that they talked to a few people at other gas stations and shops in the area.  Turned out some of the people saw our van speed by.  And we’ve been on a two lane road for miles.  We couldn’t have gone anywhere else.  How did that know to look for our van? I guess I had given them a details description of our van.  Honest, I really don’t remember.

The black officer then said, “Speaking of which, sister, we may have to take you in for questioning.  You two were the last two people to see these individuals alive.”

“Oh officer, I think we can work something out?” Redhead said, softly touching her chest.

“We can work something out, but it’s not going to be that.”

Redhead walked to the back of the van and returned with a wod full of cash.  The black officer counted and gave half to his partner.  “Guess it was murder/suicide,” he said.  Then wish Redhead a good day and a safe trip.

“What about me!” I yelled. “You just can’t leave me with this woman. I killed both those people! It was all me! I swear. ”

The white officer said, “Sir, we’ll keep you in our prayers. Have a good day.” Then drove off.

I looked up to the sky. Really? I mean, really yo. What the… Fucking Patron.  Fucking God-damned Patron. I sighed in disbelieve as Redhead approached and stood over me.

“What the hell was all that?” I asked.

“He was a Mason.  I use to be an Eastern Star, but they kicked me out because the didn’t like my conduct.  But I still know what to say when I have to and all the stuff.  Now, stop bullshitting and get in the back of the van.”

As I slowly got to the passenger side, whimpering every step, she said, “That’s why I keep two thousand dollars on me at all time.  Because you never know.  And I still got a thousand left.”

Wait, I thought she was broke.  Oh well, that’s the least of my problems.
